President Obama must postpone his planned visits to Indonesia and Australia for a later date (original plan is in March 2010) so he can remain in Washington for passage of health insurance reform.
Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country, the third largest democracy; is home to the largest Muslim population in the world; and an important partner in the G20. President Obama greatly regrets the delay of his visits. U.S. international alliances are critical to America’s security and economic progress.
During his visit President Obama will formally launch the U.S.-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership, an initiative through which the United States will broaden and strengthen relations with Indonesia to tackle important regional and global issues.
Indonesia is a country that the President has personal experience in, having lived there for four years as a child; having a sister who’s half Indonesian; and his mother of course worked extensively in Indonesia for 20 years. So he will be able to speak to his connections to the country.
The President will continue on to Australia following the visit to Indonesia.
